{"id":58055,"date":"2012-10-11T07:00:56","date_gmt":"2012-10-11T12:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thebudgetfashionista.com\/?p=58055"},"modified":"2021-05-14T05:14:18","modified_gmt":"2021-05-14T10:14:18","slug":"tips-for-finding-cashmere-sweaters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thebudgetfashionista.com\/fashion-trends\/tips-for-finding-cashmere-sweaters\/","title":{"rendered":"Tips for finding great cashmere sweaters"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The key to finding a great <strong>cashmere<\/strong> piece is to understand what makes a good <strong>cashmere sweater<\/strong> <em>good<\/em>.&nbsp; Cashmere is a soft, non-itchy type of wool that originated in the Kashmir region of India from, you guessed it, the cashmere goat.&nbsp; It\u2019s a strong, soft material and is non-bulky.&nbsp; Good cashmere sweaters are often referred to by the \u201cply,\u201d which is the thickness of the thread used to weave fabric.&nbsp; For example, three-ply <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebudgetfashionista.com\/archive\/how-to-unshrink-a-wool-sweater\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sweaters<\/a> are made with three single threads wound together, five-ply is made from five single threads, etc.&nbsp; The larger the ply, the better the sweater (although you can find quality, thin cashmere sweaters).<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>There are other factors that are important in determining the quality of cashmere sweaters.&nbsp; I\u2019ve listed a few below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The good cashmere test<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8211; Check for Pillage<\/strong>.&nbsp; One way to tell if a sweater is made of good cashmere is to rub the fabric briskly between your pointer finger and thumb.&nbsp; Notice any pillage?&nbsp; If so, then mostly likely it\u2019s not \u201cgood\u201d cashmere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8211; Feel the Fabric<\/strong>.&nbsp; Also feel the fabric.&nbsp; Does it feel itchy?&nbsp; Good cashmere is very low on the itchy-wool factor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8211; Check the Seams<\/strong>.&nbsp; Also check out the seams of the sweater.&nbsp; In more high-quality cashmere sweaters, the seams are knitted together with yarn, not sewn together using regular needle and thread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So now that you know how to test a cashmere sweater for quality, let\u2019s talk about how to find a quality cashmere sweater on a budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to find cashmere sweaters on a budget<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The first rule to finding a cashmere sweater on a budget is to wait until after Christmas.&nbsp; Most cashmere sweaters (as well as hats, scarves, etc.) are up to 70 percent less AFTER Christmas than before Christmas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In terms of where to buy it, my snobby Upper East Side friends, who consider themselves TRUE cashmere experts, swear by Lord &amp; Taylor\u2019s cashmere sweaters.&nbsp; L&amp;T cashmere sweaters come in a whole range of styles, sizes (petite and plus sizes) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebudgetfashionista.com\/?s=cashmere+sweaters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">colors<\/a> for about 70 bucks.&nbsp; I own a beautiful turquoise cashmere cardigan that I got for $12 at Lord &amp; Taylor\u2019s after-Christmas sale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other great brands are Vince, TSE and even J. Crew, which are very nice and very pricey if you purchase them at full retail price.&nbsp; Lucky for us, you can often find these brands at your local Saks Fifth Avenue outlet (Off 5th), Last Call by Neiman Marcus or <a href=\"https:\/\/sovrn.co\/1aosh36\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">T.J.
