Not surpringly, their conclusion was that it doesn’t restore melanin but rather it contains a natural dye that **may** color hair. Your own experience confirms it – you said that it stains everything it touches: “This product will stain everything it touches. That includes your fingernails, your pillowcase, clothes, or a nearby wall.” That wouldn’t be happening if it was restoring your own hair color as they claim.

Personally, I have used Hairprint True Color Restorer with great success. It works well and does not damage my extremely fragile hair. Also the ingredients are truly non toxic – you could eat it and not get sick. The downside is, it takes 2 hours and you have to apply the mixture 3 times and the conditioner 1 time. I can’t stand doing it myself so I pay a gal $200 to do it for me. I hate how costly/laborious it is but it’s the only thing I found that covers gray without damaging my hair so I keep coming back to it.
