Contouring is the shading and highlighting of the face. It is used to create optical illusion of a more dramatic, balanced and/or proportionate face. This tends to be used by professions in a photo shoot setting but has been an on and off trend in makeup practices.

Shading[]

The application of darker tones to the skin's complexion. Darkening recedes, pushes back or gives the illusion of looking smaller. In some practices Bronzer is used.

Highlighting[]

The application of colour, illumination or lighter tones to the skin's complexion. Colouring or lightening bring forward, lifts up or gives the illusion of enhancing. In some practices Blush and Highlighter palettes are used.

Blending[]

To successfully create these illusions proper blending is necessary. This is needed to be done carefully or contouring can counter your efforts. Gradual transitioning from darkening to colour or highlighting or vice versa, with no harsh or hard lines. Keep in mind the structure of the head and be aware of of the prominent parts: forehead, cheek bones and jawline as well as it's features: eyes, nose and mouth.
